  17. <p>How the Klan stole Christmas in Ohio--and what Ohioans did
  18. about it

  20. <p>     Just as Cincinatti thought it might live down the
  21. embarrassing Marge Schott affair came yet another specter of
  22. bigotry: taking advantage of a federal court decision that forced
  23. the city to permit a huge Hanukkah menorah in a public square,
  24. the Ku Klux Klan erected a tit-for-tat wooden cross nearby.
  25. Though this particular cross was not afire, its sponsorship by
  26. the hate group inflamed local opinion. A day before its erection,
  27. hundreds gathered in a candlelit protest. Hours after the
  28. appearance of the Klan krucifix, a pair of demonstrators toppled
  29. and trampled on it--but the Klan had a new cross up within
  30. days. Meanwhile, the two vandals were arrested under the very
  31. democratic principles that a century of Klansmen have never
  32. understood.
